Govt block plans for Two-Mile Borris casino

21 September 2011 15:17

The government look to have blocked plans for the planned 'super-casino' in Tipperary with the announcement of proposed new gambling legislation.

Justice Minister Alan Shatter today announced that the department will seek to change gambling laws which will provide legislation for 'modest size casinos' but not 'large resort style casinos such as have been proposed by some promoters'.

The minister noted that the presence of casino's in the form of members only clubs demonstrates that there is support for casino entertainment in Ireland and liberalisation of the industry would be especially beneficial as an attraction for tourists.

In June An Bord Pleanála granted planning permission for the €460 million 'Tipperary Venue' in Two-Mile Borris. The plans included a large resort style casino, 500-bedroom hotel and a racetrack

Mr Shatter said however that despite the benefits large scale casinos might bring in the form of employment the government was concerned about possible undesireable activities that may be attracted to such resorts.

The minister also said that present gambling laws contain shortcomings that put vulnerable people at risk to unregulated online gambling and that these would also be adressed in the planned new gambling bill.
